Arts & Culture

Trust Thamesmead is engaged in a varied arts and cultural events programme, from small scale celebrations to our annual summer festival. Over the course of the year, we both deliver and commission up to 20 events within the Thamesmead area. Over the next year, one of our key priorities is the development of an arts strategy for Thamesmead.

Black History Month

Trust Thamesmead commissioned a total of ten events to be delivered throughout Black History Month in October 2007, including drama and music workshops by Whippersnappers, who accomplished a three day tour of the Trust's two pre-schools Acorn and Arnott and four Thamesmead primary schools.

Chinese New Year Celebrations 2008

Trust Thamesmead worked in conjunction with Emergency Exit Arts, the London Chinese Culture and Arts Community Organisation and Thamesmead Town Centre Traders Association to deliver four hours of tradition and fun to Thamesmead Town Centre on Saturday 9 February 2008 - it was the biggest Chinese New Year celebration ever seen in Thamesmead.

The day included Chinese singing, the waking of the dragon, Chinese and lion dances and Linton Mead Primary School's Gong Orchestra, Tai Chi demonstrations and various workshops including how to make Chinese masks, puppets and lanterns.

Matthew Clarke Memorial Shield

The Matthew Clarke Memorial Shield Thamesmead Primary Schools 7-a-side football tournament 2007 was the ninth to be held in memory of nine-year-old Matthew, a former pupil of St John Fisher primary school, who sadly died of cancer eight years ago.

Matthew was a huge football fan and in honour of his memory, Trust Thamesmead has arranged a football tournament amongst local primary schools every year since.

Trust Thamesmead Summer Festival

Trust Thamesmead’s summer festival is by far the most popular event in Thamesmead.

More than 20,000 people turn up every year to see various artists perform on the main stage, meet local community groups and climb high on the climbing wall - amongst other things.

The T Factor

We gave The X Factor a run for its money again in 2007, when 24 Thamesmead residents and school pupils took part in the Trust's annual talent contest, The T Factor.

Soft-rock group, Audio Hawk won the competition and headlined the Trust Thamesmead Summer Festival 2007.
