Jill volunteered at the Trust Thamesmead/Greenwich Community Food Coop fruit and veg stall 2009-February 2012.
“I wanted to do something constructive with my spare time, so I enquired about the fruit and veg stall in my area of Thamesmead, which runs outside the Arnott Community Centre every Friday.
“It was perfect. It gave me the chance to meet people within my own community and what I loved more than anything, was listening to them. Every week there would be new customers, alongside the same, familiar faces and as I got to know people, they started opening up to me about their lives.
“The experience built my confidence and self-esteem, which gave me the confidence to apply for a job – and get it!
“I’d say to anyone who is interested in volunteering or building upon their skills, their confidence or self-esteem to jump in there! Not only can volunteering help you but it helps your community too.”
Jill undertook training through Trust Thamesmead's training and job search department, Building Futures and still volunteers her time in Thamesmead as part of Moorings Action Together, a pro-active residents group, who are working towards positive changes in the area.
