The Link Thamesmead is gaining momentum even before building work has finished.
Trust Thamesmead, the organisation behind the multi million pound, state of the art, community hub based under the flyover in Harrow Manor Way, held a Link street party last Friday, 19 August, which around 250 Thamesmead residents attended, enjoying the free, fun activities by service providers who will form a part of The Link. These included Thamesmead Gym who put on gym contests including the Strongest Man competition and a BBQ featuring homemade burgers by the Archway Project. There was also football with Sporting Club Thamesmead, African drumming with IMPACT Youth, sailing with Southmere Boating, as well as face painting, an inflatable, an ice cream van and music.
The day also offered residents a behind the scenes tour of The Link, to see how building work is progressing and also for them to see for themselves the size of the arches and hear about what they will offer when The Link is open.
Manager of The Link Thamesmead, Mark Blundell said: “The day brought the community together and the young people actively participated in the various activities, some of which will be available at The Link when it opens.” Adding, “It gave a real insight of what it will be like when The Link is fully operational.”
“There was a great atmosphere at The Link Thamesmead street party. Lots of people turned up, which was the result of extensive engagement by Trust Thamesmead and Thamesmead Youth Voice, who regularly door knock and speak to the local residents living in and around the area of The Link.” Said Trust Thamesmead's Marketing & Communications Officer, Julia Hickson. “The behind the scenes tours were really popular and not only gave residents the chance to see for themselves the sheer size of the build but also hear about what will be on offer to the residents of Thamesmead once it opens next year.”
