As The Good Life Garden in Birchmere Park continues to flourish another community food growing space has been created in the area.
The ‘Community Growing Together’ garden is behind Gallions Housing Association’s (GHA) offices in Titmuss Avenue on the Moorings Estate.
This new garden was made possible thanks to a successful proposal by the Trust, GHA and Groundwork London to the Transform Fund for £11.5k (plus £3k match funding from the Trust and GHA). It is being looked after by The Friends of Thamesmead Parks group, which is made up of Gallions’ residents, who also received a £2,000 donation from Axis.
The garden features raised growing beds, a dedicated wildlife habitat area and visitor area, bringing together a community of growers, sharers and helpers.
“Many residents live in high-rise properties and have no access to their own outside space”, explained organiser, Don Tidey. “Our aim was to identify somewhere the community could use and take ownership and pride in its upkeep.”
