More than 60 older residents of Thamesmead attended the Trust's International Day of Older Persons celebrations held at The Atrium, Teeswater Court, Middle Way in Thamesmead last Thursday, 1 October. Marketing and Communications Officer Julia Hickson said: “The event was a huge success with many service providers attending, giving free advice and guidance to Thamesmead residents.
“Amongst other things, a long standing housing issue was picked up by Help the Aged and some attendees, who haven't had any contact with the Trust before, have signed up to receive regular news and information from us as well as information about over 50's groups and activities in the area.”
The day also included lunch and entertainment by a folk group, who got attendees joining in a sing-a-long.
Julia added: “Some of the attendees were people who do not belong to a social group and find themselves feeling lonely and isolated. We now hope they will join one of the many over 50s groups in Thamesmead and begin a new social life that will make them feel a part of the community.”
In Thamesmead alone, there are nine community groups, including The Atrium where the above event was held, which are aimed at the 50+ age range.
