The waiting is over! Trust Thamesmead is delighted to announce that work has begun on The Link Thamesmead, its £5.65m state-of-the-art community facility under the Harrow Manor Way flyover in South Thamesmead, which is due to open in late 2011.
Through an innovative mix of new build, extension and refurbishment The Link will be open to the whole community but will specifically offer activities and services for young people.
As well as those who have already made their home in the arches; Thamesmead Gym, The Archway Project, The Cave and the YMCA Sailing Club, other organisations including Theatre Street School of Performing Arts and the Thamesmead Youth Awareness Project will be moving in on a permanent basis, whilst others will deliver even more activities and courses from the other spaces that are being built.
Architectural practice Saville Jones, which is also working with Trust Thamesmead on the development of the £4.6m Sporting Club Thamesmead project, is overseeing construction, which boasts a bold architectural design featuring a series of pods and spaces within the arches themselves, which are linked with an innovative soft and translucent ‘skin'.
The majority of the funding has come through a £5 million myplace grant. myplace is a multi-million pound government programme to deliver world class places for young people to go. The programme is funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and administered by the Big Fund (BIG), the non-Lottery funding operation of the Big Lottery Fund.
