We're Working Together

In partnership with community group Moorings Action Together (MAT) the Trust is developing projects around the Moorings area in Central Thamesmead, including in Birchmere Park, to improve the local environment.

MAT has established information sessions which are held every second Wednesday in Arnott Community Centre where interested community members can drop in to hear about MAT and support their projects.

In Birchmere Park, the Birchmere community garden volunteers with Team Gallions, London Wildlife Trust and Groundwork have been working on an exciting programme of site preparation, planting, and building planter boxes.

Now fenced, the garden is becoming a great place to enjoy gardening and being outdoors, and visitors and volunteers are always welcome. A committee has recently formed to lead the project with their vision of “A beautiful inclusive garden that is eco-friendly, good for wildlife, an enjoyable place to visit and a place to learn and work on gardening and bio-diversity projects”.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or would like to be added to the mailing list, email [email protected] or contact the Trust's Community Development team.

The Trust, along with interested community members and other groups, is now turning attention to the former One o'clock Club building on the site which has been closed for some years.

A meeting was held recently to discuss and plan for the reopening of the building as a community resource and well-being centre with a focus on supporting and sustaining the whole person (and family) with social, environmental, health and physical activities and programmes: a place to eat and meet with other community people, support the volunteers and work of the Community Garden and as a welcoming destination for people walking, cycling and using Birchmere Park.

Detailed designs and costings will be developed and funding sources identified and applied for, so that the building can be reopened and brought back into community use to benefit local residents and groups. The Trust's Community Development department is the place to go for more information.
