2008 sees the 10th anniversary of Trust Thamesmead's Matthew Clarke Football Tournament, which is taking place 3:00pm on Thursday 5 June at Thamesmead Town Football Club.
The 7-a-side annual football tournament, which is open to all primary schools in Thamesmead, is held in memory of former St John Fisher primary school pupil Matthew Clarke who sadly lost a battle with cancer.
Eleven Thamesmead primary schools; Business Academy Bexley, Bishop John Robinson, Castilion, Hawksmoor, Heronsgate, Linton Mead, Northwood, Parkway, St John Fisher, St Margaret Clitherow and Windrush, will be battling it out to become this year's champions.
Trust Thamesmead's Chief Executive Mick Hayes said: “Matthew was a huge football fan and we wanted to encourage Thamesmead primary schools to join in an annual celebration and keep his name alive.”
Trust Thamesmead has been working closely with Thamesmead Town Football Club and has funded new goals, footballs and referee kits, all of which will be used for the first time during the tournament, as well as trophies which will be presented to…
• Every participant
• Each team member of the winning team in each group (of which there are four)
• All runners up
• The each team member of the winning team
• The winning team, which will be retained by the winning club for a year.
Football scouts from both Thamesmead Town Football Club and Charlton Athletic will be attending, in hope of spotting some great football talent.
