Black History Month Celebrations

Thamesmead Town Centre came alive on Saturday, 2 October, when the first of 21 events funded by Trust Thamesmead, launched Black History Month celebrations in Thamesmead.

The celebration was opened by Greenwich Mayor Councillor Barbara Barwick, who welcomed everyone to the event, which saw many passers by take part in African/Caribbean food tasting and stopping to watch the dancing and drumming, as well as arts and crafts stalls and henna tattooing.

“There was a good mixture of people of all different ages, genre and backgrounds,” said Trust Thamesmead's Central Thamesmead Community Development Officer Roz Williams, “It was good to see so many people mixing and trying new things.” Adding “The open air atmosphere appealed to many.”

October was named national Black History Month to acknowledge the contributions of Africa to the economic, cultural and political life of London and the UK. It called on the boroughs of London to recognise this fact and also intensify their support against Apartheid. With that in mind, the Trust's aim is to celebrate black history by involving the entire community.

The event schedule has been put together by Thamesmead community group leader and member of Thamesmead Community Forum, Angela Colman, which will see several Thamesmead community groups putting on activities for the entire Thamesmead community; check out our events page to find out more.
