Green Fingers

An array of volunteers turned out for The Good Life Community Garden based in Birchmere Park yesterday (18 April 2013) for a day of planting, potting and learning, at one of three National Gardening Week events taking place in Thamesmead.

More than a dozen volunteers turned-out for the event which was led by London Wildlife Trust, supported by the Trust, Gallions Housing Association and other partners.

Volunteer, Margie Griffin said: "I was really lucky to attend an intensive three-day Royal Horticultural Society course which Gallions sent me on. There I learnt about everything from when to plant seeds to growing potatoes from a potato eye and onions by splitting the stem end of an onion." And we can vouch for that! We saw 12 (12!) onions growing, which Margie had managed to grow out of just one stem!

Volunteer, Richard Everett said: "I really like getting involved in gardening. I have my own plot at the Growing Together Garden where I grow broccoli, suede, carrots and other vegetables and by coming here, I can help others do the same and learn a lot more about different seeds and plants."

The Good Life Garden, which has been running for more a year, has a core number of volunteers who look after the garden and have high ambition and with Archway Project joining them soon to learn about planting and growing, and providing a supply of water and compost, it is hoped the garden will keep on growing - in every sense of the word.

The Good Life Garden meet at the old One O'clock Club in Birchmere Park, 10:00am-4:00pm every Thursday. You can find out more by emailing, E: [email protected]
