The Now’s the Time roadshows will be taking place in Thamesmead over the next few weeks offering local residents free lifestyle checks and the chance to sign up to be part of the programme. The roadshow schedule includes a family fun weekend at Crossway Park.
Now’s the Time is a three year project offering a range of activities for people living or working in Thamesmead for free or just £1 each. The fun ranges from free guided healthy walks, beginners jogging and Zumba to netball, football, badminton and much more.
Roadshow dates and venues are as follows:
• Tuesday 22 July and Tuesday 29 July - Lakeside Medical Centre
• Wednesday 23 July and Wednesday 30 July - Tesco, Battery Road
• Thursday 24 July and Thursday 31 July - Morrisons, Thamesmead Town Centre
• Friday 25 July and Friday 1 August - Grass area in Eynsham Drive, opposite Lidl
• Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 July – Crossway Park off Bayliss Avenue – Now’s the Time free family fun weekend, including a climbing wall, obstacle course, Charlton Athletic Football Club inflatable pitch, a smoothie bike challenge, refreshments and much more!
Cllr Miranda Williams, the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Creative Industries, said, “Being active has so many health benefits, both in the short and long term, so it’s encouraging that so many Thamesmead residents have already registered with Now’s The Time.
“We want to help remove the barriers that prevent people exercising and, in particular, to provide a choice of activities that people can easily fit within their busy schedule. The roadshows are aimed at informing people about these activities and giving them support and encouragement to get involved.”
Cllr Alex Sawyer, The London Borough of Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Leisure, said, "Over 500 Thamesmead residents and workers have already signed up to Now's the Time - but we know there are more people out there who are yet to benefit from these £1 activities.
"The Now's the Time programme was carefully designed following consultation with local people. We asked them where, when and how they would like to take part in physical activity and what may stop them from being able to take part. The answers helped us to build the timetable we now have in place and that is regularly modified to suit the participants. We are continuing to ask questions and involve local people as the programme develops. If you live or work in Thamesmead come along to one of the roadshows and find out more."
Now's the Time activities are available year-round in local venues including Sporting Club Thamesmead, Thamesmead Gym based at The Link Thamesmead, Lakeside Medical Centre, and The Business Academy Bexley.
The Now’s the Time project was made possible by a grant from the Sport England’s Community Sport Activation fund. The project is based on consultation with local residents who provided feedback on the type of activities in which they would like to participate.
Now’s the Time is a partnership project including the London Borough of Bexley, Trust Thamesmead, the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Peabody and Gallions Housing Association. Each organisation has demonstrated its commitment by investing in the project and is responsible for delivering different parts of the scheme.
The project is delivered by Sporting Club Thamesmead and Charlton Athletic Community Trust and is based on the Greenwich Get Active model.
