Thamesmead in Bloom

Twenty two green-fingered Thamesmead residents took part in the annual Thamesmead in Bloom contest managed by The Friends of Thamesmead Parks which held its awards presentation on Tuesday 12 August at the Growing Together Garden in Titmuss Avenue.

Individuals and community groups entered Best Garden, Specialist Garden, Community Garden and Best Balcony which were judged by a panel of 12 consisting of members of the Friends of Thamesmead Parks and Trust Thamesmead’s Community Development Officer, Alex Forrester with the Community Garden category being judged by Gallions Housing Association staff.

Trust Thamesmead’s Community Development Officer, Alex Forrester said: “Thamesmead in Bloom helps to build community pride in the area that matters most – that on the doorsteps of residents. A few plants here and flowers there really can make a difference. It was hard judging the entries but I am over the moon with the winners efforts and achievements.”

A sentiment backed by Thamesmead residents and Manager of Thamesmead in Bloom, Don Tidy: “It is always a pleasure to see the effort and pride residents put into their gardens. We received some really creative entries this year from fully-bloomed flowers to palm trees, all of which contribute to making Thamesmead aesthetically pleasing.”

Claire Singleton, winner of Best Balcony said: “Thamesmead in Bloom is a great contest as it adds a splash of colour to the area.

“I remember moving to Thamesmead. The only thing I was worried about was making sure the plants would survive and five years later, here I am, a winner of Thamesmead in Bloom. I danced around the room when I found out I had won.

Whilst winner of Best Different Garden, Vic Richardson said: “I was a Postman in Thamesmead for many years and used to take an interest in people’s gardens as I walked round. I now have many cactuses and palm trees – it is an obsession that has grown after my very first trip to Penzance back in the ‘60s. We returned to the area every year and each time I would leave enough room in my car for another one.

“Winning Thamesmead in Bloom is like winning the lottery but without the money. I love my exotic front garden – people often knock and ask about the plants and the wife is happy as she has her traditional English garden out the back.”

Each of the winners received a £100 voucher with runners-up receiving £50 in vouchers and third prize consisting of £20 vouchers valid at Europe’s largest home improvement and garden centre retailer.
