World Book Day Celebrations

Pupils at our Outstanding Ofsted rated pre-school, Arnott recently received a free book voucher each in aid of World Book Day and the celebrations didn’t stop there.

 

Characters from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Frozen and Toy Story turning up at Arnott Pre-school were no figment of the imagination with more than 30 pupils and staff dressing up as their favourite book characters.

 

Story-time was offered in each corner of the pre-school with plenty of books being read and stories being told to encourage interaction and imagination. Children were also encouraged to draw a picture of themselves dressed as their favourite character and yeast dough was provided with a cook book to help children to think about what types of food they could make from different ingredients.

 

Peabody’s Director of Community Investment Programmes, Veronica Kirwan said: “World Book Day is a fantastic celebratory event that happens in more than 100 countries around the world. Not only does it encourage children to explore the pleasures of reading but enables settings like Arnott Pre-school to encourage children to use their imagination by dressing up as their favourite character and finding out about their friends favourite books and characters too.”

 

One person in six in the U.K. is held back by poor literacy skills which compromise employability, health, confidence and happiness. The key to tackling this is through instilling a love of reading at a young age.

 

Events like World Book Day helps to promote reading to young people and the work the Peabody Group is undertaking across London to tackle illiteracy, not only via our two pre-schools in Thamesmead but through our Reading from the Start programme in East London. The project which offers weekly book corners as part of a partnership project with Vinci Facilities, is complemented by a free monthly book sent to young Peabody residents aged 0-5 in partnership with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

 

Arnott Pre-school was recently awarded Outstanding by Ofsted and is one of two preschools managed by Trust Thamesmead which is part of the Peabody Group.
