Creating Green Open Spaces

More than 100 Thamesmead residents attend the official launch of the first phase of the Lesnes to Crossness Path Big Green Fund project.

The area which has been named Southmere Square, off Hartslock Drive, Yarnton Way, has undergone a major transformation and now offers a beautiful park, play area and seating which offers stunning views across Southmere Lake.

Interim Executive Director Thamesmead, Peabody, Pauline Ford said: “It feels fantastic to officially open the Lesnes to Crossness Big Green Fund project. This area has undergone a major transformation with the path forming part of Peabody's commitment to regenerate Thamesmead and improve and enhance the green open spaces. We hope residents will enjoy the beautiful park, play area and seating, which offers stunning views across Southmere Lake and spending time here with their friends and family.”

Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy Matthew Pencharz said: “The Big Green Fund does fantastic work to improve the wellbeing and quality of life of local people by sprucing up and creating more green spaces in urban areas. I am thrilled that this scheme will provide environmental benefits while complementing the wider regeneration and renewal of Thamesmead and opening up a brand new community space.”

The first phase of the Lesnes to Crossness Path Big Green Fund project is funded by Gallions Housing Association who are part of the Peabody Group, Greater London Authority and London Marathon Charitable Trust. The work was undertaken by Blakedown Landscapes (SE) Ltd, Untitled Practice and Frankhams.

The Lesnes to Crossness Path is part of Peabody's £12.5million Neighbourhood Improvements programme to regenerate Thamesmead and improve and enhance the green open spaces. This has already seen 5000 shrubs being planted, canals cleaned and 200 lights being replaced in South Thamesmead.

The second phase of the path is due to start in 2016. Once complete, the path will connect Southmere Square with Alsike Road, providing a scenic route for residents and visitors alike.

Thamesmead boasts five lakes, 7km of waterways, two nature reserves and double the amount of green open space per person in the whole of London.
