Cllr Ian Clement, leader of Bexley Council and chairman of Invest Bexley, has ambitious plans for the future. Together with board and council members he aims to, "Build communities that are the pride of local residents". With its excellent schools and quality environment, Bexley is an appealing prospect for new residents of the growing Thames Gateway, particularly families.
Bexley benefits from extensive open space to the south-west, but it also has pockets of severe urban deprivation in the north. These are parts of the borough that are the focus for Thames Gateway regeneration. Attracting public investment is a challenge for the Invest Bexley board because of the widespread perception that Bexley is an affluent place, despite having areas with significant deprivation.
Regeneration is well under way in Thamesmead with the redevelopment of the Tavy Bridge estate. Improving the image of Thamesmead, a 1960s new town with significant challenges, will be key to making the new market housing in the area a success. Invest Bexley is supporting the redevelopment of Crossness Engines site, a Grade I-listed industrial visitor centre, to enhance the offer of Thamesmead to local people.
