Six teams ran the race of their lives to battle it out for the title of Trust Thamesmead's Thamesmead Town Centre Pancake Race 2008 yesterday afternoon in Thamesmead Town Centre.
A fantastic amount of spectators cheered on six teams of four from Trust Thamesmead, Gallions Housing Association, the Thamesmead Moorings Safer Neighbourhood team, Mains Amis Estate agent, Harrison Ingram Estate agent and Argos.
Two of the three races ended in a tie, which meant four of the six teams had to race a second time, which saw Trust Thamesmead take on Harrison Ingram and Argos running against the Thamesmead Moorings Safer Neighbourhood team.
The Thamesmead Moorings Safer Neighbourhood team won the overall event with the fastest time of 1 minute 41 seconds.
Trust Thamesmead provided each participant with a pancake mix and squeezy lemon as a thank you for taking part and so they could go home and sample a pancake-or-two on Shrove Tuesday. The winning team were also given a frying pan with ‘The winner of Trust Thamesmead's Thamesmead Town Centre's Pancake Race 2008' engraved on it, which was presented to the winning team made up of Azizul Islam, Adam Carmody, Sam Mattar and Ben Malone by one-time World Darts Champion and manager of the Cutty Sark pub in Thamesmead Town Centre; Andy 'The Viking' Fordham.
Azizul Islam said: “We will put the frying pan up in the Thamesmead Mooring's Safer Neighbourhood team's office for all to see.”
Trust Thamesmead's Chief Executive, Mick Hayes said: “The day was a huge success. Trust Thamesmead staff did a great job in organising the Thamesmead Town Centre Pancake Race and it was great to see so many local companies taking part in what was a fantastic, fun event.
“We hope to build on this event year-on-year.”
