The Jack Petchey Foundation Achiever Awards ceremony was held on Wednesday, 15 April at The cAve indoor climbing wall on behalf of the Thamesmead YMCA Sailing Club as a part of the Thamesmead Youth Leisure Zone.
More than 85 young people attended the awards ceremony which saw four members of the Thamesmead YMCA Sailing Club; Nikesha Patel, Jack Stevens, Tim Lawson and Alex Cunningham, presented with a framed certificate and £200 each by the Mayor of Greenwich Steve Offord.
The £800 presented on behalf of The Jack Petchey Foundation is for the winners to spend on equipment for their club, which the four agreed should be spent on life jackets, rigging and first aid.
Leader of Thamesmead YMCA Sailing group and OBE George Reynolds said: “The Jack Petchey Awards are special because they reward achievement rather than winners. We have more than 250 members at the sailing club from different backgrounds who have different skills and abilities.
The Thamesmead YMCA Sailing Club teaches people new skills and offers them room to progress and become Royal Yacht Association qualified instructors. George added: “Jack Stevens is one young person who is currently training and Richard Sheridan and Shane Butcher are two other examples; both have also previously received Jack Petchey Foundations awards; they put their money towards training for the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge race and their dreams will come true when they set off on 30 April.”
The Jack Petchey Foundation Achiever Awards are given to programmes and projects that benefit young people aged 11-25 and are designed to help young people take advantage of opportunities and to play a full part in society. Grants of over £50 million have been given since the establishment of the Foundation in 1999.
