Trust Thamesmead and Greenwich Community Food Co-op's second fresh fruit and veg stall in Thamesmead will be launching outside Discovery Primary School in Battery Road, West Thamesmead, 2:30-4:00pm on Thursday 16 September.
The not for profit, community led stall will be run by volunteers and appear outside the newest primary school in Thamesmead 11:00am-3:00pm every Thursday thereafter.
“We are wanting to encourage the community to eat their five daily portions of fruit and vegetables,” said Trust Thamesmead's Community Development Officer, Romel Holmes-Lewis, adding, “We hope to encourage people to do just that by making the produce accessible and available at competitive prices.
“The fresh produce sold is bought in bulk from Spitalfields market and will give community members a wide choice of fruit and vegetables.”
The stall is being launched after the success of the partnership's first fruit and veg stall which launched in Arnott Close, Central Thamesmead, on 28 September 2007.
Both community stalls will offer residents a pre-ordering option, where residents can order in their chosen fruit and veg which will be delivered the following week ready for collection. It also accepts Healthy Start's discount vouchers which are supplied to pregnant women and children under four in low-income families.
Romel added: “The fresh fruit and veg stall is also an opportunity for people to volunteer to man the stall and become more involved in their community. They will receive on the job training, which means the volunteers learn new skills in customer service, money handling and retail.”
