Capital Clean Up

Crutches, three trollies, TVs and a suitcase full of clothes were just some of the rubbish cleared during Trust Thamesmead’s Mayor of London Capital Clean Up event which took place under the Cory Bridge in Thamesmead on Friday.

Twenty volunteers as well as staff from Trust Thamesmead, London Borough of Bexley, Thames Water and North West Kent Countryside Partnership took part in the mass litter pick which also saw 30 bin bags of rubbish collected.

Trust Thamesmead’s Community Development Officer, Alex Forrester who lead the event said: “Friday’s Capital Clean-up was a huge success. It has not only helped to make the area more aesthetically pleasing for those using the footbridge but has made the environment safer too.”

It is hoped another Capital Clean Up event will take place in July or August when the team will return to pick-up more litter and start clearing more overgrowth in preparation for planting wildflower seeds.

The Capital Clean Up forms a part of a bigger project picture with Trust Thamesmead working in partnership with the London Borough of Bexley which will see funding from the Cory Environmental Trust in Britain  light-up the Cory footbridge in the shape of a Peace Sculpture, providing much needed lighting to create a safe and welcoming place for people to walk. This is being funded by Cory Enivornmental Trust in Britain (£100k) and the London Borough of Bexley (£60k).
