Public Vote Awarded to Thamesmead

Last month we asked you to vote in the Mayor of London’s Big Green poll to secure funding for our project Thamesmead Thames Path project to help transform the Thames Path in Thamesmead. We’re delighted to announce that our scheme received 1,333 votes and will be awarded with £122,500.

Peabody, the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Sustrans submitted the project as this stretch of the Thames Path has the potential to be a bustling popular route for commuters, walkers and cyclists. Funding will see sections of the path upgraded with the whole route being enhanced with look out points, mini green havens, seating and information on local wildlife and the fascinating history of the Thames.

Peabody’s Chief Executive, Stephen Howlett said: “The Big Green Fund’s money, together with a further £30,000 investment from Peabody will play an important role in connecting Thamesmead to other parts of South East London. Not only will it open up a number of transport links and employment opportunities but it will help to improve the green open spaces and waterways along-side the path which play an integral part in the environmental chain. Thank you to all those who voted. The change will make a difference to thousands of people and help to put Thamesmead on the map.”

Councillor Danny Thorpe, Royal Borough of Greenwich Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport said: "It's brilliant news to see that so many local people got behind this valuable project to improve the Thames Path at Thamesmead, to the benefit of all of the community. We're delighted to have been awarded the funding and are now working hard to move the project on and see these improvements take shape. It'll transform the Thames Path in this part of our borough, with better pathways and more information added, enhancing the experience of walking and cycling along the river even more."
