Triple Celebration for Thamesmead Residents

More than 400 Thamesmead residents celebrated the Queen's 90th birthday at the Moorings street party, where the community voted to re-name a path after former resident Ted Claridge.

Our co-founder and former Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Councillor Ted Claridge (1925 - 2011) was recognised for his contribution to Thamesmead with voters choosing to rename the Wayleave, known locally as The Black Path, as Claridge Way.

Ted Claridge, known in the local community as ‘Mr Thamesmead', was a supporter of local organisations for more than three decades and raised thousands of pounds for young people's charities.

The event was organised by local residents who were led by Penny Rockall, with support from us and the wider Peabody Group, Hawksmoor Youth Club, Charlton Athletic Community Trust and local ward councillors.

Guest of honour was the new Mayor of Greenwich, Cllr Olu Babatola - a Moorings resident and ward councillor.

The street party also saw children's activities, a bouncy castle and performances from a local dance group, while Peabody were in attendance to talk with residents about the changes they want to see in the area.

Peabody Chief Executive, Stephen Howlett said: “What an honour for Ted and his family. It is fantastic that residents have recognised him in this way - his legacy lives on in many people's lives and now it will live on in many more. “The whole event has been a community effort, from organising the day to turning up. It has been wonderful to see the community come together and show what a strong community spirit we have in Thamesmead.

“A big thank you to all the residents and community groups who helped make the event such as success, and to all those who had their say on Peabody's proposals for the Moorings as we shape our plans for the area”.
