Discovery Win Matthew Clarke 2016

More than one hundred primary school children take part in Thamesmead's longest running football memorial tournament during the UEFA European Championship (Euros) 2016.

Twelve primary schools took part in the 18th Matthew Clarke Football Memorial Tournament which is managed by Sporting Club Thamesmead on behalf of Trust Thamesmead, part of the Peabody Group.

A total of 34 matches were played during the three-hour event which saw Discovery Primary School vs St Margaret Clitherow in the final. Step forward this year's winner, Discovery, who beat St Margaret Clitherow 1 - 0 in the final minute.

Peabody's Chief Executive, Stephen Howlett said: “We are proud to host and manage the Matthew Clarke Football Memorial Tournament every year. It is a fantastic event which brings together primary schools in Thamesmead and builds upon the students love of football, in turn encouraging them to get active and play sport as part of a team.”

Meanwhile, Discovery Primary School's football team captain, 11-year-old Ayodeji Taiwo said: "I think it's brilliant that we are playing in memory of Matthew who also loved football. It's a really good tournament that gives us the chance to play against other schools. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to take part as it is only available to school children my age. This is the second year in a row that Discovery has won - it feels great that we have done this for us and our school.”

The Matthew Clarke Football Memorial Tournament is held in memory of Matthew, a former pupil of St John Fisher primary school pupil and a Thamesmead Town Football Club under-10s team member who sadly passed away 19 years ago from leukaemia. The tournament is thought to be the longest running annual football memorial in both the London Borough of Bexley and the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

Trust Thamesmead offers a number of programmes which enhances the lives of children, young people and their families and encourages individuals to reach their full potential.
