Funding Secured for Bridge Improvements

An important bridge in Thamesmead is set to be transformed thanks to the London Borough of Bexley's success in securing £100,000 of funding from Cory Environmental Trust in Britain (CETB).

The Eastern Way Bridge, over the A2016, also known as the 'A Bridge' in the centre of the Thamesmead flyover, is a key link between north and south Thamesmead.

CETB's funding will enable Bexley, Trust Thamesmead and Gallions Housing Association to make the bridge a much more welcoming space, encouraging more pedestrians and cyclists to use it.

The plans include coloured architectural lights to brighten the bridge structure and the area underneath the Harrow Manor Way flyover next to The Link Thamesmead youth and community centre, and clearance of overgrown vegetation. The Thamesmead Youth Voice group, which meets at the centre, supported the bid.

Local people will be asked to help design a landmark feature on the route, as part of a community art project. A creative workshop will take place on Friday 29 November from 3pm-7pm at The Link Thamesmead youth and community centre, providing the opportunity for local residents to meet with designers and give their ideas.

Further complementary works will be made underneath the flyover as part of the Pocket Park project, which aims to improve open spaces in Thamesmead. This project has been funded by the Greater London Authority, with match funding from Gallions Housing Association and Trust Thamesmead.

Cllr Linda Bailey, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, said: "Consultation with local people on the South Thamesmead Regeneration Framework showed that they wanted improved security and visibility on the streets and public spaces. This project will make a real difference for Thamesmead residents by opening up access to vital community resources."

The Trust is delighted to grant funding towards this project as it will have a significant lasting impact on this public bridge, greatly improving safety and connectivity in the area. The bridge will provide improved connections to key sites including Thamesmead town centre, Abbey Wood station, The Link Thamesmead and local green spaces.

The two projects have been developed in partnership by the London Borough of Bexley, Gallions Housing Association and Trust Thamesmead.
