Thamesmead’s Rich Tapestry

Young people in Thamesmead are marking Black History Month throughout October by exploring and celebrating the rich and diverse cultures and heritage held within Thamesmead.

Working with ‘Team Steps', a group supported and funded by Trust Thamesmead, the young people will use expressive arts, music, dance, creative writing, discussions, personal and group development in a series of workshops.

These are taking place every Wednesday at The Arnott Community Hall, Arnott Close from 6-8pm and every Friday at Thamesmead Youth Centre (recently moved to Southlake site off Yarnton Way) where themes being explored include:

• Where did my history start?
• Where do I want to be in life?
• Exploring individual identity
• Life in Thamesmead
• Boys to Men/Girls to Women

Team Steps will also be working with selected community groups in and around Thamesmead to contribute to a map representing the community of Thamesmead. The pieces will then be joined together and exhibited in and around the boroughs of Bexley and Greenwich.

Black History Month in Thamesmead will finish with an event showcasing the work and performances achieved throughout the month at the Thamesmead School of Dance, Byron Close on Saturday 29 October from 6-9pm.

If you are interested in being involved or would like more information please contact Rav Jheeta at Trust Thamesmead on 0208-320-4470.
