Celebrating Diversity in Thamesmead

The rich and diverse cultures and heritage held within Thamesmead have been showcased at an event marking the end of a programme of activities celebrating Black History Month.

Throughout October local community group Team Steps worked with young people in a series of workshops using expressive arts, music, dance, creative writing, discussions, personal and group development to explore a wide range of issues.

The project was funded by Trust Thamesmead and co-ordinated by one of the Trust's Community Development Officers, Rav Jheeta who said: “This year's celebrations have been the best so far. Team Steps have done a fantastic job engaging with the young people and debating and exploring with them some serious and sensitive issues.

“Together we have created a valuable and essential springboard from which to continue further developmental work with the young people and to encourage access to local support services. Black History Month in Thamesmead is going from strength to strength.”

Trust Thamesmead also celebrated Black History Month with the unveiling of the `Tapestry of Thamesmead' map at the event, which took place at Thamesmead School of Dance.

The map, which has been produced by a wide range of community groups in Thamesmead will be exhibited around the Borough of Bexley to raise the profile of the diverse community of Thamesmead.
