Thamesmead Primary School Tournament

Eleven Thamesmead primary schools participated in the 17th Matthew Clarke Memorial Tournament held at Sporting Club Thamesmead. The football competition is managed by Sporting Club Thamesmead on behalf of Trust Thamesmead, part of the Peabody Group and attracted 110, 10 and 11 year olds. Sporting Club Thamesmead's Centre Manager, Simon Jones said: “Matthew Clarke is always a fantastic event which brings together primary schools in Thamesmead in memory of Matthew Clarke. The atmosphere reached fever pitch.” The 3.5 hour event saw Discovery Vs Jubilee in the final. Step forward this year's winner, Discovery, who beat Jubilee 2-0 on penalties after a 0-0 score line in extra time, and their first win of the annual tournament. Captain of Discover Primary School's football team, 11-year-old Stephen Benson said: “I am absolutely thrilled we won.” The Matthew Clarke Football Tournament is held in memory of Matthew, a former pupil of St John Fisher primary school pupil and a Thamesmead Town Football Club under-10s team member who sadly passed away 18 years ago from leukaemia.
