Getting Closer to Nature

Thamesmead's nature reserve is set to reopen this autumn.

Thamesmead's hidden gem, nature reserve, Tump 53 is set to shine throughout the autumn and winter months thanks to funding from the Peabody Group.

The money will enable residents to visit the former munition site located in the heart of Thamesmead. Set in mixed woodlands and surrounded by a reed-fringed moat and boasts a glade and a pond, the nature reserve is home to many types of wildlife including more than 60 bird species ranging from the kingfisher and willow warbler to the redpoll.

Tump 53 will be open every fortnight on the following Fridays between 10:00am and 4:00pm; 11 & 25 September, 9 & 23 October, 6 & 20 November, 4 & 18 December 2015 and 15 & 29 January.

To celebrate, Peabody is offering summer events, one of which took place on Friday (14 August) and saw residents participate in a nature trail, bug rock making and exploring for creatures under logs and in trees.

The next summer event will take place 1:00 - 4:00pm on Friday 28 August when residents can learn all about birds; studying their feathers and how to make a bird feeder, as well as take away a memory stick to remember their journey.

Peabody's Chief Executive, Stephen Howlett said: “Tump 53 is a hidden gem set in the heart of Thamesmead, close to one of the leading roads connecting all four areas of the town. Set in mixed woodland and surrounded by a reed-fringed moat, a vast amount of creatures can be found here including newts, butterflies, spiders and more than 60 bird species. We are delighted so many residents attended our summer fun day on Friday and hope they enjoy our fortnightly sessions over the coming months. It is an area to be both explored and enjoyed.”

Abby Faulkner who attend the summer event with her six-year-old son, Riley, said: "I come to a lot of the events here with my family - we love them. It is so beautiful. They are always so educational for children and adults too.”

Tump 53 is owned by the Peabody Group with activities delivered by the London Wildlife Trust.
