Volunteering in the Community

Thamesmead Furniture Recycle recently received a helping hand from 20 Peabody employees, including Trust Thamesmead and Gallions, who volunteered their time to the charity dedicated to helping Thamesmead families on a low income.

Staff decorated the charity’s warehouse based in Kale Road and helped to upcycle furniture donated by local residents and businesses which will be sold on, at cost, to residents in the local area.

This is just one example of how Peabody staff are volunteering their time as part of the organisation’s Peabody Promise which encourages staff to donate two days of their time every year to help community organisations across London.

Peabody’s Director of Thamesmead Regeneration, Ken Baikie said: “There are lots of community groups and organisations based in Thamesmead who demonstrate strong community spirit, Thamesmead Furniture Recycle being one of them. It was fantastic for Peabody staff to volunteer their time and see for themselves the difference this one charity alone is making in Thamesmead.”

Chair of Thamesmead Furniture Recycle, Ray Woodage said: “It has been amazing to see TFR grow over the years. We are run by volunteers and I can’t thank them enough – all of them are putting something back in to their community. It has been especially great to see Peabody helping us out and truly getting stuck in, their help and support has made a whole world of difference.”

Thamesmead Furniture Bank recently won a £500 grant from the Big Lottery Fund with support from the Peabody Group. Money will help to purchase mini starter packs for Thamesmead residents who are on a low income and looking to move in to their first home.
