More than 400 Thamesmead residents turned-out for our Christmas lights switch on event which took place by the clock tower on Friday 5 December.
Residents faces lit up as the lights were switched on by Erith and Thamesmead MP, Teresa Pearce, including 3000 bulbs wrapped around a 25ft Christmas tree donated by the Peabody Group.
The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Cllr Mick Hayes and Thamesmead Moorings Councillor, Olu Babatola also attended.
Students from The Business Academy Bexley sung carols during the three-hour event which featured a Santa’s grotto, face painting, story-telling, Zumba with Now’s the Time, dance displays by Thamesmead School of Dance and Dynamix, entertainment from local community radio station, Miskin Radio and stalls run by a number of local community groups.
There was also a “best Christmas fancy dress” competition which was won by 9 year old Alfie Griffin who was dressed as an angel; Alfie received a £25 Love 2 Shop voucher.
Alfie’s mum, Teresa Wareham said: “Tonight has been fantastic – music, entertainment and the sparkling Christmas lights, made even better by Alfie winning the best fancy dress prize. We’re both over the moon. Thank you Trust Thamesmead and the whole of the Peabody Group – we have attended lots of your events and always really enjoy them.”
Peabody’s Chief Executive, Stephen Howlett said: “There is a real community spirit in Thamesmead and tonight’s landmark event brought residents together once again with an added bit of sparkle. We hope everyone will continue to enjoy the lights as they undertake their Christmas shopping and we look forward to working with the community again next year and helping to shape the town’s future together.”
Erith & Thamesmead MP, Teresa Pearce said: “I would like to congratulate Trust Thamesmead for arranging this event and for once again bringing the community together. I would also like to thank Peabody for donating such a fantastic Christmas tree, which will undoubtedly brighten up the dark winter nights in Thamesmead Town Centre.
“It was an honour to switch on the Christmas tree lights and to see so many people getting into the festive spirit. This last year has seen a lot of changes across Thamesmead, and I hope that next year we’ll see many more positive developments for local people.”
